Open Bite Caused by Excessive Pacifier Use
Babies suck on any object that is placed in or near the mouth. This is a normal response through which the baby learns about their world and receives nutrition. The experience also provides security and comfort.
If a pacifier is over-used, or the child continues to suck the thumb into early childhood, the upper teeth may protrude, or not erupt properly.
It is important to monitor the sucking habits of your child, especially at the time the permanent teeth erupt. The pediatric dentist will provide important dental health information, and inform your child about the long-term consequences of this habit.
